Senior Statistics Assistant Job Description

This position is located in the Statistics Division, ECLAC. The Statistical Assistant reports to the Chief of Statistical Innovation and Dissemination Unit.
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region’s economic and social development. Its mission includes the design, monitoring, and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise, and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Statistical Innovation and Dissemination Unit, the Senior Statistics Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Senior Statistics Assistant Collects, evaluates, processes, and analyses statistical data from a variety of sources.
  •  Processes classify and ensure internal consistency of data; reconciles discrepancies in data series.
  • Senior Statistics Assistant Builds special data sets for specific research needs or for reports.
  • Senior Statistics Assistant Develops creative ideas to present complex concepts and data. Produces highly creative and analytical graphics and web design outputs to disseminate statistical information according to Division objectives. Produce creative graphics in electronic format, adaptable for use in the production of print and online materials.
  • Senior Statistics Assistant Applies tests and executes programmers for specific statistical applications on the basis of specifications provided.
  • Senior Statistics Assistant Maintains specific information products in their area and assists more senior staff in providing information products to others.
  • Senior Statistics Assistant Drafts communications related to all aspects of data analysis, including information on available data sets, data catalogs and data analysis, revisions, and other related issues, as well as preparing unit contributions for a variety of periodic reports.
  •  Prepares newsletters and other products related to data analysis activities; drafts inputs for a wide range of documents/reports, briefings/debriefings, correspondence, etc.
  •  Serves as a focal point for coordination, monitoring, and expedition of data analysis activity, involving extensive liaison with diverse parts of the organization to request data and to communicate data needs to other parts of the organization. Follows up on requests made by other team members and coordinates activities.
  •  Assists liaising with United Nations system organizations to obtain necessary statistical and other relevant information.
  •  Supervises and guides other general service staff in the function, as needed.
  •  Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required

NOTE: For positions in the General Service category, candidates are required to clearly indicate in their PHPs relevant information confirming completion of High School.

JOB – SPECIFIC QUALIFICATION

  • A University degree in statistics, mathematics, economy, sociology, architecture, cartography or related areas is desirable.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • At least ten years of experience in statistics, finance, accounting, or related areas are required.
  • At least seven years of increasing experience in statistical information dissemination and web application programming, particularly related to MDG/SDG or other international commitments, are required.
  • Working experience in data visualization is required.
  • Working experience in international organizations and familiarity with Latin American and Caribbean countries, mainly with SDG statistical monitoring mechanisms at the regional/national level, is desirable.

LANGUAGES

  • ’English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, advanced knowledge of Spanish and intermediate knowledge of English is required.

NOTE: ‘’Advanced knowledge’’ equals a rating of ‘’fluent’’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand), and ‘’intermediate knowledge’’ equals a rating of ‘’confident’’ in two of the four areas.
