Position Description:

The Immunobiology, Nutrition, and Toxicology Laboratory conduct research on biomarkers and immune function in relation to infectious diseases, nutrition, and environmental toxic exposures using cutting-edge technologies. The Laboratory also provides research support to collaborators internally within icddr,b, and from national and international research institutions. The Lab also helps in the capacity development of researchers by training them on sophisticated technologies in relation to Laboratory-based research work.

The Research Investigator will report to the Senior Scientist. The major responsibilities of this position holder will be to conduct scientific research on public health issues; Support developing successful proposals; Secure independent funding for small projects; Develop and implement rigorous protocols; Coach junior scientists with the objective of generating knowledge from research evidence within the strategy of the Centre; and organizational values and guidelines.

Duties and responsibilities:

Research Proposal Development:

  • A review published journals and brainstorm research ideas with scientists;
  • Identify new research ideas and develop proposals for seeking funds.
  • Research Protocol Development:
  • Create detailed research design and methodology to achieve the study objectives;
  • Estimate requirements for financial and non-financial resources based on research methodology;
  • Share protocol draft with collaborators (internal and external), and modify according to their feedback; Seek approval from IRB and regulatory authorities (if needed) on protocol;

Project Management:

  • Create a detailed project plan covering milestones, deliverables, etc.;
  • Support CSU to hire staff; Train staff on data collection and sample collection procedures;
  • Initiate procurement of necessary items; Field-test and finalize data collection tools;
  • Assign work to team and initiate activities as per project plan; Supervise data collection; Coach staff on how to address issues faced during field-work;
  • Monitor quality of data collected, and response rates against timelines and research criteria;
  • Oversee the laboratory activities and conduct tests as per study requirement; Track consumption of financial & non-financial resources;
  • Take corrective actions to comply with donor mandates and research protocols in order to complete the research, with adherence to quality standards and project timelines.

Scientific Analysis, Knowledge Creation and Translation:

  • Critically assess data quality; Apply rigorous scientific analysis to derive meaningful inferences from data;
  • Guide team to analyses data and draw appropriate scientific inferences;
  • Discuss preliminary findings with other researchers and key stakeholders and develop articles for peer-reviewed journals; Conduct peer reviews of manuscripts of other researchers;
  • Actively disseminate the knowledge at conferences and seminars.

Scientific Capacity Building:

  • Coach junior researcher/interns/research fellows on laboratory methods;
  • Involve junior researcher in discussions, manuscript writing, etc.;
  • Recommend staff for internal and external training programs;
  • Conduct training sessions to share knowledge and experiential learning in order to develop good researchers within the Centre.

People Management:

  • Interview candidates and make hiring recommendations if required;
  • Promote a spirit of collegiality and gender diversity amongst team members and in the organization;
  • Address and resolve any other diversity-related issues; Mentor young professionals and prepare them for higher responsibilities; Encourage team members to collaborate across areas;
  • Set goals and conduct appraisals for the team; Take appropriate actions to manage poor performance (such as creating Performance Improvement Plans, coaching, etc.) in order to build and develop an engaged and high-performing team; Identify the high performers and recommend promotions.

Required experience and qualifications


  • Masters in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology;


  • 5 years of research experience in laboratory-based research as well as field research and project implementation (preferably in the field of toxicology). Candidates having 1st authored publications in international peer-reviewed journals will get preference.
