Job Description

As a Programme Management Intern, you are in charge of evaluating and assessing enterprise necessities and operations. You do this to determine the required programs and projects to carry out. You are responsible for the general organization’s improvements.

The internship position is located at the UN-Habitat Regional Representation for Africa (RRA) in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The intern will work closely with the project manager and the UN-Habitat team based in Abidjan and will participate in the management and visibility of projects/programs.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel, and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the Supervision of the National Programme Manager and the National Technical Advisor the intern will:

  • Provide administrative support to the work unit in the preparation of various project documents such as work plans, budgets, reports, and proposals on program implementation arrangements.
  • Assist the program team in reviewing and preparing documentation on the procurement of goods and services, and support contract tracking.
  • Identify sources, gather and compile data and information for the preparation of documents, guidelines, and other material as required.
  • Participate in the planning, preparation, and implementation of meetings, workshops, conferences, expert group meetings.
  • Assist with text edition of reports, articles, and concept notes as per request.
  • Support the elaboration of powerpoint presentations related to UN-Habitat mandates.
  • Translate complex concepts related to UN-Habitat mandates into infographics and other graphic materials in relation to the New Urban Agenda and the SDG 11 in French and English.
  • Assist in the development of UN-Habitat urban planning policy documents, guidelines, information materials, and presentations through identification and review of relevant publications and documents, drafting and commenting on documents.
  • Assist in engagement activities with the government, private sector, and community-based projects.
  • Translate Project and Support documents from French to English and vice versa;
  • Support Communication and Visibility activities (publications, presentations, catalogs, folders, brochures, videos, online, and handbooks regarding all the projects and areas UN-Habitat works).
  • Collect and share information on risk monitoring in the implementation of projects/programs.
  • Conduct literature reviews on specific topics and good practices in the areas involved.
  • Perform other duties relevant to the candidate and Ra, as determined jointly.
  • Perform any other tasks requested by the country team.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • a. Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • c. Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, Ph.D. or equivalent
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred area of studies:

  • Currently pursuing an advanced degree in Project management, Geography, Urban or Town Planning, Architecture, Social Science, Communication, or related fields.
  • (Preferably: Master or Ph.D. candidate; Minimum: Final Year Undergraduate student) or recently graduated with one of the previously mentioned areas.

Work Experience

  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advanced course work, or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
  • Are you familiar with the New Urban Agenda and the SDGs?
  • Do you have good teamwork skills? Please explain by giving an example.
  • Do you have any knowledge on urban development thematic?
  • Are you familiar with the urban context in Côte d’Ivoire? I

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For this position, fluency in both English and French is required.
  • Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
