Role Specific Information

​ The purpose of the Education Coordinator is to provide supervision and technical support to NRC staff in the day-to-day implementation of the Education-related response and projects, both for children and youth. The position is based in AlGadarif / Sudan.

NRC resumed operations in Sudan in 2020, providing humanitarian assistance, protection, and durable solutions. Our country programme integrates all of NRC’s six core competencies (camp management, education, ICLA, livelihoods, shelter, and WASH), and provides a rapid response capacity (including for the recent refugee emergency in eastern Sudan), and thematic capacities for cash and market-based approaches, advocacy, digital modes of assistance, and co-leading various technical and strategic coordination platforms.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Line manage and support NRC Education staff
  • Adherence to NRC policies, guidance, and procedures
  • Contribute to Education project development, project proposals, and provide input on needs and gaps
  • Project Cycle Management (PCM) & Implementation. As delegated by line-manager, responsible for the successful implementation of all Education projects delivered through direct or partner-led modalities throughout the full project cycle. The position-holder may be required to represent the Education project team in PCM meetings and to produce key PCM documentation (e.g., M&E Matrix, Procurement Plans, etc.).
  • Capacity Building. As delegated by line-manager, responsible for supporting the successful capacity building of NRC Education staff in relevant competencies. This includes ensuring performance management of all Education project team members in the field, identification of capacity building needs, and planning and resourcing capacity building initiatives within the framework of the NRC Sudan strategies, tools, and guidelines.
  • Technical Quality. Responsible for ensuring implementation of high-quality Education projects by NRC/partners, in accordance with the agreed NRC Sudan Country and Education Strategies, tools, and guidelines. This includes – but is not limited to – ensuring the achievement of compliance with global, national and local standards; ensuring the compliance of all Education projects with INEE Minimum Standards; meaningful consultation with affected populations throughout the project cycle; needs-based targeting and selection; and integration with other Core Competencies where relevant.
  • Project M&E. As delegated by line-manager, responsible for accurate and high-quality Monitoring and Evaluation of NRC Education or related activities. This will include – but is not limited to – the successful implementation of construction/process, output and outcome monitoring conducted by NRC, implementing partners and/or third parties. M&E activities will be conducted in accordance with the Sudan M&E Strategy, tools, and guidelines.
  • Reporting. As delegated by the line manager, responsible for accurate and high-quality contributions to the reporting of NRC/partner Education-level achievements through all relevant reporting mechanisms. This includes, but is not limited to, internal reporting mechanisms (e.g., NRC GORS, outcome monitoring reports), donor reports and inter-agency reporting of achievements (e.g., 4Ws).
  • Protection Mainstreaming. Responsible for supporting protection mainstreaming in all Education or related activities throughout the project cycle. This includes – but is not limited to – ensuring the safety and dignity of beneficiaries, understanding their diverse needs, enabling meaningful access to NRC’s services, ensuring adequate accountability to affected populations, ensuring adequate participation and consultation, and supporting the realisation of their human rights. All project activities will be conducted in accordance with NRC’s Protection Mainstreaming Strategy, tools and guidelines.
  • Programme Development. Responsible for supporting high-quality Area Office-level input into Sudan (country-level) Education programme development initiatives (e.g., Core Competency Strategies). This may include – but is not limited to – supporting Area Office-level context & needs analysis, over-seeing primary needs assessment, pilot activities, and meaningful engagement in relevant forums and learning events. The position-holder may be requested to represent the Area Office Education project team at NRC Sudan Education workshops, Community-of-Practice meetings/calls, project update meetings, training, and other related events.
  • Coordination & Representation. As delegated by line-manager, responsible for representing NRC Education programmes in Area-level coordination mechanisms, in formal and informal forums and through bilateral (peer) coordination.

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • 3+ years of experience from working in Education / Children / Youth / Child Protection in a humanitarian / recovery context
  • Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
  • Knowledge about own leadership skills/profile
  • Fluency in English and Arabic, both written and verbal
  • Knowledge of the context in East Sudan
  • Knowledge and usage of INEE Minimum Standards
  • Experience with start-up project implementation and exit
